For me it starts probably around the same time as you all, before the show began.

Back then, in 1999, we were getting previews on television. I still clearly remember things back then. One of the previews ended with SpongeBob's "Prepare to be vanquished" line in "Tea at the Treedome". I'll be honest, I thought it was going to be kind of stupid. Back then my favorite Nick show was Rugrats. This was the time when the channel was beginning to go downhill, so I didn't think SpongeBob would be much better then the other mediocre shows.

I'm not exactly sure why I kept in touch with it. I guess kids just watch television more. And I was 8 years old. I wasn't a big fan of it, however. It was just something to watch. Originally I didn't have a single favorite character. When asked, I would just say "the random fish" characters. Ya know, people like Scooter and the anchovies. It was probably around 2001 when I actually became a fan. I said that, of the shows currently on, it was my official second favorite, sitting below Rugrats and knocking down Hey Arnold!.

I remember for a while, even though I liked the show, I didn't particularly like SpongeBob himself. I eventually came to the decision that Gary and Squidward were my favorite characters.

It must have been either 2002 or 2003 when I really grew to like it, claiming that one of my viewings of it one day was a "special occasion". I decided that SpongeBob was my favorite show on Nick (though I still had a soft spot for Rugrats, and still claimed that it WOULD still be the best if the series didn't die a horrible death).

As for my original favorite episode? It wasn't concrete yet. My original might of been "No Weenie's Allowed". Another was "Pressure", mainly cause I thought the live-action scene was cool.

Despite all of this, things didn't truly get rolling until 2004.

I talked about the show all the time with some friends that I used to hang out with in grade school (since then, if I remember correctly, they've long since stopped watching it completely, so I guess I'm the only one left). I also remember having recorded a few episodes, mostly "Shanghaied" though which was an early favorite, though I also went through other fazes then. At this time I also bumped down Squidward and marked SpongeBob and Patrick as my two favorites in the show. It wasn't before long before I decided that nothing Nick ever produced was as good. Not Rocko, not the classic Rugrats episodes, not Doug. Nothing!

Yep, things were quite awesome in these times.
Cool

Back then I always had this idea that, if SpongeBob were turned into a movie, it would be bad. I convinced myself that I would never like it... And then, soon after, we got previews for the SpongeBob Movie and I was going hyper for it. Figures, eh?

I couldn't wait to see it. When I did, I wasn't disappointed. In fact it was better then I thought. My favorite part was "Now That We're Men". I saw it multiple times and then missed it for a while. Not often does that happen with me and a movie.

Thankfully I bought the DVD! Soon, despite rumors, the show got new episodes! Sadly though, I was one of the people who believed that they should have ended it after the movie, because I wasn't thrilled by season 4. I was also disappointed by the "Best Day Ever". But then the next season was a comeback! Since then it has just continued to get better. We also got some amazing 10 year anniversary moments! Now, I see no reason for it to end in the next few years. It's officially awesome again, even though it hasn't and probably won't top any of the original seasons.

That brings us to SpongeBob today, where I continue to keep in touch with new episodes as they air. My favorite episode is probably "SpongeBob's House Party". I don't imagine myself ever giving up on it, because not much compares to the emotional investment that I have placed in this show or it's cast, mostly SpongeBob who is pretty much my favorite character in anything ever. All of this just makes me happy to be a fan.

Smile

I'll just sum it up:

I saw the series when it first premiered, and it instantly became my favorite Nickelodeon show. I immediately noticed a decline in quality when season 4 premiered, but I was still a big fan and I enjoyed the post-movie seasons a lot (not as much as the first 3 seasons, but still). I have been a huge fan of this show since the very beginning, and plan on remaining a big fan for as long as I live. Smile

Well my history isn't as long as talonmalon, but I saw the show when it premiered after the KCA's and I thought it seemed cool. Then it premiered and I became a huge fan. I noticed that the show wasn't the same during season 4. I roughed out season 5. I had my hopes brought back up in season 6. Haven't watched much of season 7 because I have primarly become less of a SpongeBob fan. Do I still watch it? From time to time, but I think I have started to grow out of my SpongeBob fandom.

Your Personal History with the Series Empty Re: Your Personal History with the Series

Post by Metal Snake 12/8/2010, 10:31 pm

My history with the show is pretty simple.

I wasn't into Spongebob when I first watched it back in 2001, because I thought it was weird. But after watching a few episodes, I grew to like it. I started watching it regularly, and three years later, (you guessed it) I watched the movie and I liked it. I wasn't too hyped when I realized there were going to be more episodes, but I watched them anyways. I wasn't too impressed, but I kept watching the show. I thought the episodes after season 4 were better, but I still felt like the show was lacking something. I took a break from watching Spongebob consistently until 2009. I watched a few more episodes, and I was pleasantly surprised. I started feeling that I had been too critical with the show, and I started to like it again.

So yeah, that's about it.

I watched it.

It was good.

I continued to watch.

Although I didn't really become a huge fan until my mom bought me the Season 2 DVD.

Your Personal History with the Series Empty Re: Your Personal History with the Series

Post by SpongeSebastian 12/10/2010, 8:27 pm

The first time I have ever seen SpongeBob was in 2000 (at age 6), when I was flipping through the channels when suddenly this cartoon talking piece of cheese (or at least how I saw him at the time) caught my attention. I watched as this so-called sponge turned himself into a skyscraper and made "a million of me." Immediately I wanted to watch more and more episodes. I always wanted to watch it whenever I got a chance, and it soon became a guilty pleasure. I even remember playing with some of the sponges in my house, pretending they were SpongeBob. Silly Face!

It wasn't until about a year later that I recall SpongeBob merchandise becoming really popular. The earliest I remember getting was a T-shirt of SpongeBob ripping his pants. For the next several years, I noticed SpongeBob becoming a huge trend among other kids and even adults. I hadn't known a single person who hadn't heard of the show/character, and I was proud to be one of its overgrowing fans. By 2002, I had seen practically every episode, and tried the best I could to catch new episodes whenever they aired.

I continued to buy merchandise for the next few years, flooding my room, with SB bed sets, calendars, TV set, DVDs, video games, traffic light, books, clothes, pajamas, seat covers for our car, etc, etc, etc! I could no longer deny to myself that I was obsessed with this little square dude; and in 2003, when I heard that SpongeBob was getting his own theatrical movie, I almost freaked. For more than a year, I eagerly awaited for the movie to come out, and on November 20, 2004, (the second day of its release) I went to see it with my family and loved every second of it! Once again, SpongeBob had not let me down and I couldn't wait to own the DVD.

Around that same time, the show had been on a two-year hiatus, with only very few episodes being released each year. I slowly began to get tired of watching the same reruns and really wanted to see something new. My disappointment grew further when Internet rumors speculated that the show had been canceled. However, when Nickelodeon announced in late 2004 that they had ordered another batch of SB episodes for 2005, my excitement came back. I couldn't wait to routinely watch new episodes like I had in 2002. The only disappointment I had at first was that the episodes didn't go in continuity with the movie (what with SpongeBob being that manager of the Krusty Krab 2 and such), but I enjoyed them anyway. I wasn't too judgmental of their quality, like others on TV.com were.

Ah yeah, that brings me to TV.com, the site I joined in June 2005. This was the first time I had ever become really interactive with SpongeBob's online fan community. I get to befriend dozens of crazy SB fanatics like me, and I really had a fun time discussing the show and other subjects with my cyber-friends (I didn't have many real friends at the time, so the cyber-friends helped me pass the time).

To this day, I am still a devoted SpongeBob fan. I have seen every single episode, and almost always catch a new one whenever it airs. The show's quality has really improved itself recently and I still hear people talking about it. I'm still a part of the friendly SpongeBob community that exists here online and hope to continue enjoying SpongeBob for many, many years to come! SOO Happy

Your Personal History with the Series Empty Re: Your Personal History with the Series

Post by CDCB 12/11/2010, 11:10 am

This is my history with the show.

At first when the show came out, I wasn't aware of it. I was only in preschool in 1999, but I started to learn about it in 2001, I believe. I wasn't allowed to watch it, though, because my parents wouldn't let me (this is before they even knew how good it was).

I do however, remember one time flipping through the channels and seeing the scene with Plankton crying from F.U.N. That probably was my first exposure to an episode, but since I was at the end and only channel surfing, I didn't watch the rest. I still had yet to enjoy the series.

Then for two years, I wouldn't watch it at all. I'd be invited to SpongeBob birthday parties and stuff like that, so I definitely knew there were a lot of fans out there. I even remember getting a SpongeBob Valentine's Day card in 1st Grade, I think.

In--I think--December 2002 when we were at a hotel, I remember catching my sister watching SpongeBob on TV. The episode was "Suds," and I sort of enjoyed it, but not too much. I didn't get in trouble for watching it--I think my parents saw what it really was for the first time and that it was "okay" after all.

Then in 2003, I watched a SpongeBob marathon with a ton of Season 1 episodes. I remember two of the episodes shown were "The Chaperone / Employee of the Month" and "Arrgh! / Rock Bottom." That was when I was starting to really enjoy the show. I was finally a fan of it. Soon I was getting things Complete Season 1 set, and I remember receiving SpongeBob candy for Easter that year.

Now, I was watching SpongeBob all the time on TV. I had SpongeBob shirts, SpongeBob toothbrushes, SpongeBob games...lots of SpongeBob stuff. Everybody was talking about it, and I was a part of it. In fact, it had become my favorite show.

Then I heard there was going to be a movie about it. I was really excited and couldn't wait. When it finally came out, I saw it on the opening day and was blown away by how good it was. I thought it was amazing.

I heard rumors sometime on the internet that the show was going to be canceled. I was upset because I'd just become a fan the previous year and I didn't want to see it go so soon. However, in a matter of months I heard that it was renewed for another season. I was happy to hear this...until I saw what this new season was.

I watched (and recorded) the premiere of Season 4--"Fear of a Krabby Patty / Shell of a Man." I remember thinking that the writers had "lost their touch." I may have been 10, but I could see a difference. I didn't let that stop me, though. I stuck with the show because of what it once was--a sure-fire cure for a good laugh.

So all through these years, even though the following seasons have had their ups and downs I've still remained a viewer of SpongeBob, although it is no longer my favorite show.

But yeah, that's my history. I still like the show and all, but I don't really watch it as much unless there are new episodes or ones my parents (also fans of the show still) haven't seen.

Wow CDCB, "Suds" was also the first complete SB episode I saw. What a coincidence.
